A recurring plagiaristic form of GABA

Piracetam is a nootropic drug in the racetams group, with chemical name 2-oxo-1-pyrrolidine acetamide.Piracetam is the prototype for Racetam supplements, which are a group of synthetic supplements intended to provide a cognitive boost.Piracetam was developed in 1960s in Belgium as a 'smart drug'. It is a recurring plagiaristic form of GABA, also known as aminobutyric acid. 


Since its discovery and usefulness detection, piracetam has been used as a nootropic agent for the enhancement of memory in human beings. Piracetam is an exceptional nootropic with low contagiousness and insalubility levels and incurs a small number of side effects. Its effectiveness in the treatment of ischemia, cognitive impairment, stroke, and dementia is acknowledged widely. It also contributes to the cognition enhancement of dyslexic and dyspraxic children. Moreover, its usefulness is equally apparent in Down Syndrome patients whereby piracetam is employed to slow down the rapid aging of the brain. It also contributes as a modulator of brain metabolism, neuro-protection and neuro-plasticity. Piracetam is also known to have anti-seizure or antiepileptic effects. Furthermore, it is also used for the reduction of symptoms associated with anxiety, withdrawal from alcohol, and clinical depression.


This remarkable smart drug is used for the modulation of membrane fluidity. As a consequence, it demonstrates certain effects on the release of neurotransmitters and receptor binding. It also results in improved cell functioning and better viscosity of cell membranes. In addition, piracetam "appears to reduce erythrocyte adhesion to vascular endothelium, hinder vasospasm, and facilitate microcirculation" (Winblad, 2005) at a vascular level. Moreover, it is also known to have an involvement in the activation of acetylcholine, which helps the brain to take up oxygen with improved blood flow. Piracetam is also considered a great promoter of information transference from one brain hemisphere to the other. It enhances motor planning by creating a coordination between both hemispheres.


Nowadays, it is widely used in the fields of medicine.

Piracetam has a history of being used to treat cognitive impairment. According to a meta-analysis on human studies, piracetam improves general cognition when supplemented by people in a state of cognitive decline, such as the kind that comes with aging. Though piracetam may be a useful supplement for improving longevity, it offers limited benefits for healthy people.


Healthy people supplementing piracetam do experience little to no cognitive benefit. Though piracetam supplementation in healthy people is understudied, preliminary evidence suggests that piracetam is most effective for older people. Piracetam supplementation has also been found to reduce the chances of a breath-holding spell in children.


Piracetam enhances cellular membrane fluidity. This mechanism explains why piracetam is able to improve cognition, particularly in elderly people.


Piracetam is as effective as aspirin when it comes to preventing blood clotting, which makes it a useful supplemental intervention after cardiovascular trauma.
